History

Historically, Labuan comes from the word port or a village used as an anchorage for people from the Bajo and Bugis tribes of South Sulawesi. In the end, this village came to be called Labuan Bajo. In 1991 Komodo island was include on the Komodo National Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site also a popular destination for diving and it has been included in the New 7 Wonders of Nature list since November 11, 2011.

Geography

Komodo Island is located in the southern part of Indonesia in East Nusa Tenggara province, there is a village called Labuan Bajo. Labuan Bajo is one of the 9 villages in Komodo District, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. The beauty of Labuan Bajo has become a very famous tourist destination abroad. Being a unique tourist destination, Labuan Bajo later became the capital of East Manggarai Regency with transportation facilities including docks, ports, and even an airport.

Climate & Weather

February is also one of the rainiest months on the islands. The rainy season (December – March) Komodo Islands will reward you with their distinctive green colour and minimal tourists.

The people

The majority of fishermen living in the villages in the vicinity of the Park are Muslims.Hajis have a strong influence in the dynamics of community development.  Fishermen hailing from South Sulawesi (Bajau, Bugis) and Bima are mostly Moslems.  The community from Manggarai are mostly Christians.

Komodo Village has had the highest population increase of the villages within the Park, mostly due to migration by people from Sape, Manggarai, Madura, and South Sulawesi. The total population currently living in the Park is 3,267 people, while 16,816 people live in the area immediately surrounding the Park.
